History repeats itself, and once again Americans find themselves subject to the whims and obtrusions of a despotic government. Formerly world-renowned for our freedoms and liberty, America has lost the values that made our people and nation great. They have been neglected, thrown to the wayside in the pursuit of so-called “progress.”

There are those in government and elsewhere who would have us believe the insidious lie that we, the American people, cannot manage our own lives and affairs. Slowly, incrementally, they indulge their own pursuit of power at the expense of our liberties. America was founded by rugged individualists, who left their homelands to start a new life in the land of opportunity and won their freedom from the world’s superpower. Now, we their descendants languish under the oppressive obligations of the world’s largest, most powerful nanny state.

James Madison counseled, "There are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of people by the gradual and silent encroachment of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations." (1) 200 years later, we see that his worries were well founded. Laws and regulations have become an inescapable part of Americans' daily lives. We have become accustomed to expect restrictions on even the simplest and most personal of matters. From what we can build on our own property to what we take into out own bodies, we are no longer accountable only to ourselves.


The abuses are occurring at both the state and federal level. In North Carolina, a dentist or lawyer driving 2 miles to work could be fined $100 for not fastening the seatbelt. The ongoing battles in California and elsewhere over medical marijuana use profile the federal government’s growing control at the expense of states’ rights. Basically an anti-federalist at heart, I am devoted primarily to fighting the burgeoning leviathan that is the federal government. I believe that through the Tenth Amendment, the states are given the right to make countless laws that are not permitted to Congress. That said, intrusion of rights at any level is a serious threat, and we should beware all encroachments, however slight they appear.

Nor is the loss of freedom the only problem present in America. Everyone today seems to have a pet grievance: the economy, corruption, immigration, abortion, the foreign wars, the list goes on and on. Some people, myself included, also have the rather vague, disquieting notion that America isn’t what it used to be, or ought to be for that matter. Whatever issues inspire you, keep them in mind as you read this passage by C.S. Lewis:

 “We all want progress. But progress means getting nearer to the place where you want to be. And if you have taken a wrong turning, then to go forward does not get you any nearer. If you are on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive men. We have all seen this when doing arithmetic. When I have started a sum the wrong way, the sooner I admit this and go back and start again, the faster I shall get on. There is nothing progressive about being pigheaded and refusing to admit a mistake. And I think if you look at the present state of the world, it is pretty plain that humanity has been making some big mistake. And if that is so, we must go back. Going back is the quickest way on.”  

If you believe, as I do, that America is quickly losing the freedom and morality that since our inception has made us strong, the only way forward is to go back. We must return to the principles upon which the Unites States was founded. Besides the vital concept of liberty, what else provided the foundations of our country? The answer might prove surprising to some: basic Christianity and ethics.

“We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We’ve staked the future of all our political institutions upon our capacity…to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” – James Madison

Our Founding Fathers knew that it is not enough to be free, we must choose to make good and wise decisions with our freedom. Those of us who know the truth must speak and act boldly before it is too late. Already our liberties have been vastly curtailed, and dissension is increasingly unwelcome. For too long we have fallen away from the guiding principles of our nation. It is time for Americans to spread the word, rise up, and claim the full rights accorded to us under the Constitution of the Unites States of America. Let us resolve then, as Lincoln so famously stated, “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
